Hi!
I am currently porting GnuGo to GP2X, a Linux based portable video game console, running at 200 MHz. I am not sure about which one to choose: gnugo 2.6 or gnugo 3.6. I am afraid that recent version of gnugo will be to slow to be usable. Do you have some opinion on that? Do you think that GnuGo 2.6 could be better than GnuGo 3.6 on a slow machine, considering that the --level parameter would have to be set very low with GnuGo 3.6 ?
Thanks! |

It is true that GnuGo 3.x is much slower than 2.x, at least in the ports 3.6 and 3.4 for PPC.
If you want to go for 3.x, the console should at least be 2 - 3 times faster than a similar clocked PPC. In other words, it should perform as good as a 400 - 600 MHz clocked PPC (which is high end currently).
I doubt that this will be the case, however, a gaming console with linux may be well optimized for this kind of task.
IMO, the above performance requirement is the absolute minimum. Personally, I don't like to play 3.6 on my 612MHz PPC, because it is to slow (or I am to impacient).
However, from a players point of view 3.x is of course preferable. 2.6 makes to many bad moves and spoils your style if you play it often.
So benchmark your console and make a decision on the base of the results.

Thanks for this detailed answer. Actually, I have decided to port the PlayStation Portable version , called PSPGGO, which is based on 3.6. This was a pretty easy job and the result is already working fine.
It is fast on 9x9 and acceptable in 13x13, at low strength level of course.
You scared me a bit with your comments on the risk of GNUGo on game style. GNUGo is my main game experience
Thanks again! |
