File management
Introduction
PE File provides a Pocket PC file explorer very similar to
Microsoft Windows File Explorer. PE File is small, fast, very well optimized.
All PE Explorer Series products are based on this intuitive, flexible and powerful
design.
With PE File:
You can find.
You can create, view and edit shortcut.
You can tap and hold to display a popup menu.
You can do multiple select, copy, paste,
delete, etc.
You can double tap to run
a program.
You can
associate a file extension with a program.
You can view file or folder properties in details.
You can send
and receive files to another handheld device using built-in Infrared support.

File management overview
Almost all tasks involve working with files and folders.
The work you do with files and folders falls into five categories:
Organizing
and managing files and folders
You can perform basic file and folder tasks, such as creating, deleting,
copying, and moving files and folders, and more advanced tasks, such as
changing file and folder properties.
Searching
for files and folders
You can narrow the focus of your file and folder searches by including
additional search criteria, such as the date, attributes, etc. You can also broaden the scope of your file searches by using
wildcard characters, and specifying literal text or regular expressions.
Securing
your files and folders
You can secure files using encryption tools.
Transferring
files using Infrared
You can transfer files between two handheld device using Infrared.

To open a file or
folder
- Double click the file or folder to open.
Notes

If the file you want to open is not associated with a particular program,
you can select the file, click File, point to Run/Open
With/Associate to open the following screen:

- The file you just selected, in this example, \My
Documents\Music\immune.mp3, will
appear in the File selected: box.
- Click on button ... to choose the
program you want to use to open the selected file.
- Click File, point to Run/Open
With/Associate again, this time the program you selected, in this
example, \app\winamp.exe, will appear next to
button ...
- If you want to associate this program with the type of files you selected,
check option Always use this program to open or associate the following
type of files.

Click on the button Open With.
To run a program
There are two ways to run a program:
- Double click the file you want to run directly.
- Click File, point to Run/Open
With/Associate to open the following screen:

- Click on button ... to choose the
program you want to run.
- Click File, point to Run/Open
With/Associate again, this time the program you selected, in this
example, \app\winamp.exe, will appear next to
button ...
- Click on the button Run.
To create a new folder
- Click the folder in which you want to create a new folder.
- On the Edit menu, point to New Folder.
- Type a name for the new folder.

Note
- You can also create a new folder by right-clicking a blank area in the
explorer, pointing to New Folder.
To create a new file
- Click the folder in which you want to create a new file.
- On the Edit menu, point to New File.
- Type a name for the new file.

To copy or move a file or
folder
- Select the file or folder you want to copy or move.
- On the Edit menu, click Copy. Or, click Cut to move
the item.
- Browse to the folder
where you want to copy or move the item.
- On the Edit menu, click Paste.
Notes
- To select consecutive files or folders to copy or move, click the first
item, press and hold down SHIFT in the small keyboard, and then click
the last item.
- To select files or folders that are not consecutive, press and hold down CTRL
in the small keyboard, and then click each item. In Pocket PC, hold the Action Button.
To change the name of a
file or folder
- Select the file or folder you want to rename.
- On the Edit menu, click Rename.
- Type the new name.

Notes
- You do not need to open the file or folder to rename it.
- File names cannot contain the
following characters:
\ / : * ? " < > |
- You can also rename a file or folder by right-clicking it and then
clicking Rename.
- You can also select the file or folder first, then tap on the selected
file or folder again. Type the new name.
To delete a file or
folder
- Select the file or folder you want to delete.
- On the Edit menu, click Delete.

- You can also delete files or folders by right-clicking the file or folder
and then clicking Delete.
- To select consecutive files or folders to copy or move, click the first
item, press and hold down SHIFT, and then click the last item.
- To select files or folders that are not consecutive, press and hold down CTRL, and then click each item. In Pocket PC, hold the Action Button.
To search for a file or folder
- Click File, point to Find.
- In Combo box next to Button Find, type in the file
name or folder you want to find. You can use * to match any number of
characters and ? to match single character.
- In In, click the folder you want to search to start in.
- You can check option Subfolder to search for all the subfolders. By
default, all subfolders will be searched.
- To specify additional search criteria, click button Options, and
then click one or more of the following options to narrow your search:
- Select Date to look for files that were created or modified on
or between specific dates.
- Select Attributes to look for files of specific attributes, such as
Archive, ReadOnly, System, Hidden, Folder and In-Rom.
- Click button OK.
- Click button Find.
Notes
- If you get too many results, try entering additional search criteria to
make your search more specific.
To create a shortcut
- Select the folder in which you want to create the .
- Highlight a file, select Copy from the Edit menu.
- Go to the destination folder in which you want to create shortcut. Make
sure there is no selected item because you cannot paste to a selected item.
Selected item has blue highlight.
- Click Paste Shortcut from the Edit menu.
- A file with extension .lnk is created. That is the shortcut file. You can
double click on the shortcut to launch the program, or rename the file to
whatever you prefer. But you have to keep the .lnk extension name intact.

Notes
- A shortcut is a quick way to start a frequently used program or open a
file or folder without having to go to its installed location.
To view or change
file or folder properties
- Select the file or folder, click the Edit menu, click Properties.
- Depending on the file or folder selected, different screens will be
displayed.

- To change the properties of a file or folder, check or uncheck the options
Read-Only, Archive, Hidden, System in Attributes.
Obviously option In-Rom can not be changed. Then click button OK.
Notes
- You can also right-click a file or folder and then click Properties.
